Improving habitat, protecting communities

Recently, you may have noticed several dump trucks and bulldozers moving sand between Spring Lake and Sea Girt. This sand is the byproduct of a portion of the dewatered dredge material that was removed from the pond in 2016 by Monmouth County.

In total, the county removed approximately 37,000 cubic yards of sand from Wreck Pond that had accumulated over time. You may remember, the dredged material from Wreck Pond was  deposited at designated areas along Spring Lake beach adjacent to the pond in order to dewater.

Over the past two weeks, while preforming citizen science monitoring, the Society has seen sand trucked and spread out along the western edge of the beach over the recently constructed secondary outfall pipe, adjacent to the outfall.

This sand will act as a buffer against storm event wave energy, and by doing so, help to improve the resiliency and protect the integrity of the pond and the welfare of  both Spring Lake and Sea Girt. As we move forward, you will see more of us on site as we prepare for our Spring fish sampling in March.
