The Wreck Pond team welcomed local students to Wreck Pond on May 12 and May 15th for interactive , hands-on field trips. Schools that participated included: St. Catherine School (Spring Lake), and Wall High School  (Wall Township).

Earlier in the year, Julie, Habitat Restoration Technician for the American Littoral Society, originally met these students in their class rooms to present the Wreck Pond project, as well as lessons on biodiversity, living shorelines, and general watershed science. For their recent visits to Wreck Pond, students rotated through different stations that were meant to mimic similar field work that ALS staffers, and others in the field partake in on a day-to-day basis.  Stations include: Seining & Fish Sampling, Water Velocity, Water Quality, and Macro Invertebrates.

Members from US Fish and Wildlife Service, Wreck Pond Watershed Association, and Surf Kings Fishing Club of Spring Lake volunteered their time to help assist throughout the day. For more information on student involvement revolving around Wreck Pond, please contact: Julie@littoralsociety.org

Another sampling event is in the books. Last week, the Society completed its third fish sampling event at Wreck Pond. We caught an additional 17 alewife bringing our total to over 30 caught for the season. We also snagged a couple of our “regulars” including white perch, white sucker, and gizzard shad (see the previous blog post). In addition, we caught one brown bullhead and one black crappie, our first captures of the year for each species. We were also able to host three budding marine biologists (or maybe ninjas) for bring your child to work day.
